The Iona Hotel at Garfield was originally opened in April 1904. It was built by George Ellis.
April 1904 - South Bourke & Mornington Journal
"The hotel will become a favourite resort for holiday seekers and sportsmen as within a short distance from the town are to be found numerous fern gullies and caves of marvelous beauty and for those who are in quest of game the surrounding country will be found all that a sportsman wishes, whether it be with the gun or fishing rod."
Sadly, the hotel was destryed by fire on April 23, 1914. The existing Hotel was erected the next year with a report once again in the South Bourke & Mornington Journal saying the hotel was inspected by the Shire of Berwick Health Inspector and he was pleased with the appointments and sanitation and that no expense had been spared by the proprietors to make it all respects one of the best equipped hotels in the colony.
